Emirates flight attendant jumps out of B777

An investigation has been launched into the death of an Emirates flight attendant reported to have jumped out of a Boeing 777 aircraft while clutching a bottle.

The flight was EK729 from Dubai. The plane was not airborne but was parked at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda, having landed there earlier. It was preparing to take off on the flight back to Dubai.

African news outlets published a statement from the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda: “A female member of the cabin crew appeared to have opened the emergency door and unfortunately fell off an Emirates aircraft that had safely landed and parked.”

The height of a B777 is about 18.5 metres from top of tail to ground and the height of the rear door is about half that.

Reports said the woman “experienced severe injuries” and was taken to the closest hospital, Kisubi Hospital in central Uganda. Two hours later, doctors there confirmed her death.

African media quoted witnesses saying the woman had jumped or fallen onto the tarmac while holding what appeared to be a glass bottle under her chin.

Ugandan news outlets and social media portals published pictures of a woman in Emirates’ flight attendant uniform lying face down on the tarmac.

Britain’s Independent named the woman as Elena Vassileva, 46, a Bulgarian who was a member of the Emirates crew. It said conjecture surrounded what had happened to her as flight EK730 prepared to depart Entebbe for Dubai.

The British outlet cited social media reports saying the deceased had a verbal altercation with other crewmembers just before scheduled takeoff and passengers stated she had deliberately opened the door.

Emirates said the woman had “fallen” from the aircraft and was being treated in hospital, though Ugandan authorities had by that time confirmed her death.
