image010Speaking at Arabian Travel Market 2015 in Dubai this week, flamboyant and often outspoken Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, did not hold back in his description of the recent document created by US carriers, Delta, American and United in relation to the Gulf carriers’ competitive position.

The US carriers are accusing Gulf carriers Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad of breaching “open skies” guidelines and receiving around US$40 billion in state subsidies in the last decade, which has enabled them to be much more competitive and able to keep ticket prices low and also damage competitors in key markets.

Describing the 55 page document as “flim flam”, “tosh” and false, Sir Tim also went on to say, “You could drive a bulldozer through almost everything they wrote about us.”

He said that Emirates has never been subsidised since the initial investment by the Government and will respond in its own time.

He added that it will do so in a very robust manner, with the response a sledgehammer to the report, and that there no legal action was planned currently, but Emirates would wait before deciding to take any legal action against the US carriers.
