Staff at Emirates received a unique opportunity to understand the technology behind the gas turbines that power the Rolls-Royce aircraft engines when Andrew Harrison, Chief Life Cycle Engineer, Rolls-Royce visited Emirates Engineering. Harrison, who has over 30 years of experience with Rolls-Royce, is a member of the Rolls-Royce engineering fellowship, representing the 100 most senior technical specialists accountable for maintaining Rolls-Royce at the cutting edge of technology and competitiveness, and a member of the UK National Council for Through Life Engineering Services which provides strategy and direction for UK industry, Academia and the Government.

During the interaction Harrison took the audience, which composed of both technical and non-technical staff, through an interactive journey detailing the components, function and basic operations of the gas turbines that drive the aircraft. At the end of the session, staff also had the opportunity to go through a fully immersive and virtual exploration of the architecture of the Rolls-Royce engine through Hololens.

“We are delighted to welcome Andrew Harrison at Emirates Engineering for what is an extremely valuable educational opportunity for our staff, especially for those in non-technical positions to get a good understanding of the technology that drives our aircraft,” said Ahmed Safa, Emirates Senior Vice President, Engineering Support Services. “We will continue to work with our partners including Rolls-Royce to deliver training and developmental opportunities for our staff,” he added.

This is not the first time that Emirates and Rolls-Royce have collaborated on training and education. Earlier in 2015, Rolls-Royce presented a Trent 900 training engine to Emirates at the Dubai Air Show. This allowed staff and trainees to familiarise themselves with the mechanics and the operations of the engine that powers Airbus A380s up to one year ahead of the delivery of the first Emirates Airbus A380 aircraft with the Rolls-Royce engines. Emirates has so far taken delivery of 5 Airbus A380 aircraft fitted with the Trent 900 engines with the first aircraft joining the fleet in December 2016.

Every year Emirates also nominates up to 15 UAE National employees from various management roles within the Group to participate in the Rolls-Royce Leadership Training Programme. The programme, composed of two modules, trains delegates on various aspects of business and leadership including creativity and innovation in management and sustainability. As of 2017, 6 cohorts from Emirates Group have completed their training programme with Rolls-Royce.
