Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa, Australia’s luxury conservation-based resort, is once again supporting the nation’s largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day.

The resort is inviting the local community and visitors to the region to join its staff in tidying up the surrounding Lithgow region on Sunday 2 March 2014.

Clean Up Australia - Emirates Wolgan ValleyOn average, every Australian sends over 690 kilograms of waste to landfill each year – enough to cover the state of Victoria. Even more alarming is the fact that much of this waste ends up in waterways, in bushland, on beaches and in oceans.

Clean Up Australia Day aims to provide practical solutions that help communities clean up and conserve the environment. Formed by Ian Kiernan and Kim McKay in 1990, the inaugural event attracted almost 300,000 volunteers. In 2014, it is estimated that over 595,000 Australians will take part in Clean Up Australia Day across hundreds of sites nationwide.

Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa is calling on volunteers to help support this important environmental event. Starting from Angus Place Colliery at Lidsdale and finishing at the resort, the clean-up will cover almost 23 kilometres of local road taking in some incredible scenery along the way including the Wolgan Valley and Donkey Mountain.

“Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa was built on the philosophy of complete integration with its environment. We were the first carbon-neutral resort in the world, and have maintained our carbon-neutral status each year. We have committed to long-term sustainability through ecologically sustainable design principles and by supporting wide-ranging conservation practices which focus on protecting endangered native species,” said Joost Heymeijer, General Manager, Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa.

“Clean Up Australia Day aligns perfectly with our philosophy of protecting the environment and we are proud to support this event each year. We are also fortunate to have Ian Kiernan as a close friend of Wolgan who was responsible for meticulously restoring the 1832 Heritage Homestead that we have on the property back to its original state,” concluded Joost Heymeijer.
