Summer vacation is here! Taiwan Tourism Bureau launched a special Formosa Summer Festival with a series of activities integrating special themes of sports, food, Summer Solstice 235, sand sculpture, and railroad travels. Whether it is traveling deep into the secluded forests of Alishan, or exploring the beauty of the eastern coast, the convenient and diverse mass transit system is the best choice for traveling in Taiwan. It also helps to reduce carbon emissions and contributes to a better earth.
Taiwan is an island of approximately 14,400 square miles (comparable to the size of the state of Massachusetts). The stratigraphic movements in Taiwan created a complex and diverse geographical landscape. Besides having over 200 mountains above 9,800 feet, it is also filled with hills, plains, basins, islands, longitudinal valleys and coastal scenery. With the Tropic of Cancer running through the island forming a variety of ecosystems that can be found in tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, and boreal climate regions, Taiwan has about 18,400 species of wildlife; among them, there are more than 20% of endemic species or subspecies of Taiwan, including Formosan landlocked salmon, Formosan macaque, Formosan black bear, Taiwan blue pheasant, and more, making it one of the most important conservation sites in the world.
Taiwan is also surrounded by the ocean with enriched marine resources, such as a healthy growth of coral reef off XiaoLiuqiu to the south and Green Island to the east. Local businesses in XiaoLiuqiu now offer “beach money” to encourage visitors to clean the beaches in exchange for discounts. The use of green tableware and sustainable seafood ingredients also help to raise environmental consciousness. Through the efforts of the Islanders, XiaoLiuqiu has now become the island with the highest density of sea turtles in the world with a population of about 150. Visitors who enjoy scuba diving should explore this gorgeous little island for a chance to swim with the lovely sea turtles.
