Engine cover flies off on ‘scariest flight of my life’

Alarming footage has appeared of what a female passenger described as the “scariest flight of my life” – after an engine cover flew off mid-flight and United Airlines had to make an emergency landing in Hawaii.

United’s flight 1175 from San Francisco to Honolulu landed safely and nobody was hurt.

Passengers were alarmed when the plane reportedly made a “loud boom” and began shaking and rattling. “Scariest flight of my life,” wrote passenger Maria Falaschi. Passengers later praised the flight crew, who they said kept everyone  informed as the plane came in for landing.

“They let us know that we had to brace for impact in case there was a rough landing,” passenger Allison Sudiacal told Hawaiian TV channel HNN. “It was scary. But they did a really good job.”

Damage to engine cowling

Passenger Tom Podolec posted some images and footage on Twitter.

Podelec sounded a calming note in subsequent Twitter exchanges. When another prospective passenger expressed fears after viewing the footage, Podalec reassured them: “I can appreciate your fears. Flying is extremely safe and these events are very rare. Keep in mind the plane landed safely and no one was hurt. Your biggest fear should be if you packed everything you’ll need. Enjoy your trip.”

Hawaii’s state Transportation Department confirmed in a statement that the flight landed safely with fire services and aircraft rescue personnel standing by if needed.

United later issued a statement:

“United flight 1175 traveling to Honolulu from San Francisco landed safely after the pilots called for an emergency landing because of a loss of the engine cowling (the covering of the engine). Our pilots followed all necessary protocols to safely land the aircraft. The aircraft taxied to the gate and passengers deplaned normally.”
