Enoy Front Row Seats to The Great Migration with Sanctuary Retreats

As an African safari traveller, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen what is surely one of the most spectacular wilderness shows on earth. Each year the endless plains of East Africa bear witness to the great migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra as they make their way around the Masai Mara and Serengeti – a never-ending journey of over 1,800 miles in constant pursuit of life-giving rains and greener pastures.

The wildebeest and zebra migration usually passes through Kenya’s Masai Mara between July and October. Close on their heels, lion, hyena and cheetah all take advantage of this blanket of moving prey. Dramatic river crossings are also the order of the day, as crocodiles lie expectantly waiting for herds to cross the rivers.

Between December and March the migration then moves to the southern Serengeti in Tanzania where an estimated 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during a six week period each year – usually between late January and mid-March.

Luxury travel operator, Sanctuary Retreats, offers up some of the best opportunities to experience the great migration, with a mix of luxurious accommodation and exciting game viewing in exclusive wildlife locations.

Serengeti Migration Camp, Tanzania

In Tanzania the Sanctuary Serengeti Migration Camp moves between three different locations, literally following the migration as it travels across the Serengeti, offering guests year- round access to this incredible spectacle. Depending on exact migration movement, the camp is based Western Serengeti from April to July, the Northern Serengeti from August to November and the Southern Serengeti from December to March. There are just ten luxury safari tents, each with their own en suite bathroom and indoor bucket shower, bringing guests close up to the migration action as it happens.

Sanctuary Kusini, Tanzania

The only permanent camp in this unspoiled and remote southern part of the Serengeti, Sanctuary Kusini is ideally placed to witness the migration from mid-December to the end of March when wildebeest congregate on the camp’s “doorstep.” The park is noted for its lion and cheetah populations and leopards and there is the chance to contribute to the cheetah watch project that is taking place in the region.
