As an African safari traveller, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen what is surely one of the most spectacular wilderness shows on earth.
Each year the endless plains of East Africa bear witness to the great migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra as they make their way around the Masai Mara and Serengeti – a never-ending journey of over 1,800 miles in constant pursuit of life-giving rains and greener pastures.
The wildebeest and zebra migration usually passes through Kenya’s Masai Mara between July and October. Close on their heels, lion, hyena and cheetah all take advantage of this blanket of moving prey. Dramatic river crossings are also the order of the day, as crocodiles lie expectantly waiting for herds to cross the rivers.
Between December and March the migration moves to the southern Serengeti in Tanzania where an estimated 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during a six week period each year – usually between late January and mid-March.
Luxury travel operator, Sanctuary Retreats, offers up some of the best opportunities to experience the great migration, with a mix of luxurious accommodation and exciting game viewing in exclusive wildlife locations.
Located in a private concession on the banks of Kenya’s Mara River, the Sanctuary Masai Mara Seasonal Camp is open from the end of June to the end of October each year. This small and intimate tented camp offers guests a front row seat to the Great Migration, without leaving a lasting footprint on the environment – and without any concessions to style and comfort. The camp also offers an array of activities including game drives, cultural visits, bush dinners, sundowners, balloon flights and scenic flights.
In Tanzania the Sanctuary Serengeti Migration Camp moves between three different locations, literally following the migration as it travels across the Serengeti, offering guests year- round access to this incredible spectacle.
Depending on exact migration movement, the camp is based Western Serengeti from April to July, the Northern Serengeti from August to November and the Southern Serengeti from December to March. There are just ten luxury safari tents, each with their own en suite bathroom and indoor bucket shower, bringing guests close up to the migration action as it happens.
