Escape the daily grind, recharge your body and soul, and immerse yourself in luxury in one of the four sumptuous rooms at Heemskerk Suites. The hotel, owned and operated by Norman Heemskerk, was crowned the best small-scale hotel in the Netherlands this year on Trip Advisor. And for good reason.

Heemskerk Suites is not your average Amsterdam hotel. With just four suites, a strong focus on ecological entrepreneurship, and attention to luxury and relaxation, this boutique hotel is geared towards guests looking for something extra: personal attention, privacy, warmth, and a cosy atmosphere. The suites feature a spacious bedroom, a separate living room, a bathroom with a Jacuzzi, and a private kitchen. Heemskerk Suites is an adults-only establishment.

Norman Heemskerk took over his parents’ business in 1996 and restored the building back to its original state. Five years ago, he and his wife Sonia converted the building’s ten small rooms into four spacious suites. The interior was inspired by the four elements – earth, air, fire, and water – andincludes several ecological adaptations. The hotel is largely powered by solar panels, rainwater is used for the toilets, and the building itself features an eco-friendly Wi-Fi connection.

‘It’s a home away from home,’ says Norman. ‘Guests come for a place to relax and unwind near Amsterdam’s touristic and cultural hotspots. My wife and I try to live a healthy life and want to offer our guests the same. Everyone receives an organic welcome gift when they arrive and we make sure our Wi-Fi emits little to no radiation at night. This allows our guests to relax and recharge,’ he adds.

‘We live in a hectic world. People have a hard time finding a place where they can truly relax. We offer that place.’ His vision is catching on. Last year, Heemskerk Suites was ranked fifth in the European Hospitality Awards for the best hotels in Europe. This year, guests crowned the Amsterdam hotel as the best small-scale hotel in the Netherlands on the review site Trip Advisor. Heemskerk Suites was also nominated for the prestigious Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards.  ‘Our guests’ appreciation means the world to us,’ says Norman.
