Europe: so hot right now

unnamed (21)Australians love to travel with the number of residents taking overseas holidays continuously on the rise according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In 2013, 8.4 million Australian residents took an overseas holiday. Insight Vacations has crunched the numbers to determine which European destinations are ‘hottest’ this season.

Joost Timmer, Insight Vacations Australia Managing Director said, “Now that we’re several months into the European selling season for the northern hemisphere summer, we have seen some destinations really move into the limelight. Scandinavia experienced rapid growth this year and while Spain has long been on Australian’s radar, itineraries taking in the Iberian Peninsula, particularly Portugal have been very popular. Croatia bookings have increased by 20 per cent which is no surprise, with the positive word of mouth that has spread about the destination from those who have already visited and been seduced by cities such as Dubrovnik and the spectacular Dalmatian coastline.”unnamed (22)

Additional destinations racing up Insight’s 2014 ‘hot’ list include:

  • Denmark has been on Australian’s radar as home to ‘Our Princess Mary’ for the past decade, though we are also becoming aware of the many offerings Scandinavia offers visitors; from the novelty of the midnight sun, dramatic beauty of the Fjords and the thriving culinary scene that has a focus on fresh local fish, meat and game. Copenhagen has just won a record 17 stars in Michelin’s Main Cities of Europe 2014 guide and in Sweden you can expect flavours to be determined by whatever mushrooms or berries or other produce is in season. Copenhagen just graced our TV screens as it played host to the Eurovision song contest; millions of viewers tuned in globally, bringing international attention to the city. Insight’s Scandinavia tours such as the 15-Day Spectacular Scandinavia & its Fjords have experienced an increase in bookings of over 30 per cent on the same time last year.
  • Insight Vacations is one of the few operators to offer tours in Iceland and the popularity of these tours mirrors that of the destination with the tourism board logging record visitor numbers in 2013. This will no doubt continue to increase with the untouched beauty of the country being showcased in the popular TV show Game of Thrones and Ben Stiller’s recent film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Insight’s Natural WondersOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA of Iceland itinerary does a loop of Iceland over eight days taking in many of the key scenic highlights from Iceland’s equivalent of Niagara at Gulfoss, the geothermal region of Lake Myvatn and Europe’s largest glacier.
  • Portugal has patiently waited in Spain’s wings for many years though Aussie’s are very quickly realising that although it’s much smaller than its neighbour, it packs a big punch as far as sightseeing, charming cities, wining and dining and experiences are concerned. The Iberian region was one of Insight Vacations hottest selling destinations in 2013 and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down this year.
  • Croatia is constantly bestowed with tourism-related glory – Korčula was recently named the most beautiful island in the world by a European magazine, American website Buzz Portal named Split as one of the ‘19 Truly Charming Places to See Before You Die’ and Zagreb was named the second best European destination by a European not-for-profit tourism organisation. Australians have certainly picked up on this and are flocking to the Eastern European gem. Numbers on Insight’s Croatian tours have been steadily increasing over recent years leading Insight to introduce two new tours to the 2014 programme. County Roads of Croatia has been selling like Croatian Krafne, the itinerary takes in not just the stunning Dalmatian coastline but heads inland to Zagreb and the UNESCO World Heritage site – Plitvice Lakes.
