Cathay Pacific today announced it will increase capacity into Sydney with the introduction of a third daily Boeing 777-300ER from 29 October this year. The move to the larger Boeing aircraft is in response to greater demand for the airline’s services from Sydney.
This is the third time since February 2015 Cathay Pacific has increased the size of its aircraft on daily Sydney – Hong Kong flights and represents a total increase in capacity over this time of more than 25 per cent.
According to Nelson Chin, General Manager Southwest Pacific, Cathay Pacific, demand for the airline’s services is growing at a pleasing pace.
“Demand is certainly there to enable us to increase the number of seats for sale to and from Sydney,” he said. “While there is a lot of competition on routes, particularly from Sydney, clearly there are many customers who appreciate the quality, level of service and value for money that sets Cathay Pacific apart.
“The move to the B777 means we can offer 154 more Premium Economy Class and 1,078 more Economy Class seats each week,” he added.
Cathay Pacific’s Premium Economy has proven particularly popular with Australians. Not only is it offered on all flights to and from Australia, passengers can book Premium Economy Class beyond Hong Kong onto many destinations around the globe.
Sydney Airport Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather congratulated Cathay Pacific on the upgauge.
“Today’s announcement provides additional capacity for this popular route, and we’re delighted to see Cathay Pacific continue to grow its presence in Sydney,” Ms Mather said.
“Passenger numbers from Hong Kong grew 12% in the year to November 2016 and the country represents our ninth largest inbound residency. It’s also a major gateway port for China, with 17% of the mainland served via Hong Kong.
“We look forward to the continued success of the Hong Kong-Sydney route for Cathay Pacific.”
Cathay Pacific’s Boeing 777-300ER offers a three-class service with 40 seats in Business Class, 32 in Premium Economy and 268 in Economy.
