Evil clowns mount attacks in France, California, Britain

egtmedia59Travellers beware! A spate of attacks by crazed clowns, some of them armed, has authorities in several countries concerned and perplexed.

In France, armed clowns have wrought havoc in various parts of the country, with police detaining offenders. Some of the clowns were carrying pistols, knives and baseball bats, London’s Daily Telegraph reported yesterday.

Police arrested a teenager dressed as a clown on Monday near Paris for trying to attack a woman. They detained 14 other young people dressed as clowns and carrying weapons in the Mediterranean port town of Agde, while in the nearby city of Montpellier, a man disguised as a clown battered a pedestrian with an iron bar and was later arrested.

On the other side of the Atlantic, creepy clowns armed with knives and baseball bats are stalking a California community.

Police in the towns of Wasco, Delano, and Bakersfield received 20 reports last week of marauding clowns, some of them said to be armed and chasing people in the street.

Sergeant Joe Grubbs of the Bakersfield Police Department told local television: “There’s a natural phobia of clowns. And clearly if someone is dressed up as a clown and holding a weapon in a threatening manner that’s going to frighten people.”

The phenomenon of dressing up as an evil clown to terrify passers-by is also occurring in Britain. People dressed as zombies have accompanied some of the clowns. Police are baffled.

In Greater Manchester, UK, police dealt with 19 incidents involving people dressed as clowns last year. Disguised in colourful wigs and face paint, the offenders vandalised property, robbed people and carried out bogus charity collections.

Clowns have struck before. A video of a Manchester gang robbing a jewellery shop while dressed in fright wigs and Halloween attire a couple of years ago can be viewed here:

The approach of Halloween (tonight, Friday 31 October 2014) has been blamed for the outbreak of clown misbehaviour but Halloween is not celebrated much in France, where some of the incidents have occurred. Other suggestions include the influence of a recent episode of the popular TV series American Horror Story featuring Twisty the killer clown.
