The venue beat competition from Convention Centre Dublin, ICC Berlin, Fira Barcelona, Palais Des Congres de Paris, Fiera Milano City and Geneva Palexpo.

It is the fourth year in a row ExCel has won the title and will now go through to the final round of voting for the ultimate accolade in the travel and tourism industry of World’s Best.  This will be announced at the Grand Final ceremony in December.

Tracy Halliwell, Director of Major Events and Business Tourism at London & Partners, said: “This richly deserved award highlights London’s comprehensive offering as a leading destination for business tourism.

“The meetings industry plays a central role in London’s economy and the capital offers unrivalled venues with facilities to accommodate a wide range of events.

James Rees, Executive Director, ExCeL London: “This is an incredible achievement and we are absolutely delighted to be recognised by our industry peers.  It is testament to the passion and dedication of our teams at ExCeL, who have worked hard to attract and deliver some of the world’s leading events and the support we have had from London & Partners, local and national Government to help us achieve our ambition of becoming Europe’s leading events destination.  We are committed to investing in our infrastructure to ensure it remains a world class facility that continues to ensure our clients deliver their most successful events with increases in delegates, sponsors and exhibitors.”

The meetings industry generates £5.6 billion for the capital’s economy, according to a recent UK Economic Impact Study.

London hosts over 350,000 meetings per year and has over 2,700 venues with over 110,000 hotel rooms for delegates.

The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Today, the WTA brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.
