Excite Holiday, an online travel agent only wholesaler, is reporting increases in travel bookings to unexpected and exotic destinations in search of once-in-a-lifetime holidays.

According to Excite Holidays, Australians love to travel and are keen to visit far-flung destinations like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, South Korea, Cambodia, Borneo and China.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for short-term departures also back up this trend. In the first 6 months of 2013, there was a 44% year on year increase of Australian residents travelling to Nepal for holiday. Departures to South Korea increased by 14.5%, Sri Lanka (5%)and Cambodia (24%).

“Some travellers feel like they’ve been everywhere already and that’s why these exotic destinations are growing in popularity, as it’s a thrilling adventure that’s unique and memorable. Furthermore, a lot of interest in these places comes from documentaries people see on TV. These shows really do get people interested,” said George Papaioannou, CEO of Excite Holidays.

Mr Papaioannou continued: “A lot of people are looking at destinations which are just opening up to tourists. There is now a greater awareness of China, Bhutan, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Borneo and Myanmar as a destination and our Reservations team are currently receiving enquiries about some of these destinations every day.”

In addition, Australian travellers won’t simply by lazing by the pool or lying on the beach during their holiday. Travellers will be taking in the sights, experiencing a new culture and meeting the locals.

Mr Papaioannou stated that this “is a great opportunity for visitors to see ancient cities and explore the countryside before it modernizes.”
