From August 1 passengers flying from Australia to the rest of the world on China Southern’s famed Canton Route can spend up to 72 hours visa-free in one of the world’s most exciting cities, Guangzhou in southern China.

Guangzhou (pron. Gwung-jo) is the capital of Guangdong Province, home of Cantonese food and more than 13 million people at the head of the rich Pearl River Delta triangle linking Hong Kong and Macau.

Australia is one of 45 countries granted visa-free status for up to 72 hours for travellers flying to international destinations via Guangzhou.

The decision brings Guangzhou into line with Beijing and Shanghai and allows visitors to travel to any part of Guangdong Province, including the thriving economic hub of Shenzhen.

“This is absolutely wonderful news for China Southern because it makes it easier for international travellers to stop over in our wonderful hub city,” said China Southern General Manager Australia and New Zealand Henry He.

“Australians may not be able to pronounce Guangzhou or even Guangdong straight away, but just 24 hours among the amazing can-do Cantonese people will help visitors to see why Guangzhou is China’s next ‘in’ destination.

“The Cantonese really love their food, and this is evident in the amazing range and quality of Guangzhou’s food scene. But that is only part of the story because Guangzhou and Guangdong typify how China is opening its arms to the wider world.”

Mr He said Australian travel companies which already offer travel holidays in China were queuing up to provide stay and tour packages for stopovers of up to 72 hours.

“China specialists like Creative Holidays and Wendy Wu Tours are already in the market with exciting yet affordable packages offering the pick of Guangzhou’s hotels and tour packages to the main sightseeing spots.  This is a great opportunity to get to know old Canton, one of China’s most exciting provinces.”

The new visa-free stopovers come as China Southern upgrades its Australian services with the introduction of the latest A330 airliners offering flatbed comfort in Business Class and personal TVs throughout and from October 28 an A380 superjumbo service on the Guangzhou-Sydney run.
