Excrement and liquor bottles in flat-rental horror

September 8, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

A Frenchwoman has placed photos on social media in an attempt to speed up compensation from Airbnb after she used the home-sharing app to let out her smart little Paris apartment to a tourist – who turned out to be a depressed alcoholic with a major hygiene problem.

Laurie S, who declined to give her full name, smelled a rat (so to speak) when she returned home to her boutique Paris flat and found the door was jammed.

It seems that the renter, a Canadian, had warped the flooring. The shower room and toilet were both badly damaged, and rubbish was strewn everywhere, according to Laurie S. The place was full of “excrement, urine, and an impressive quantity of empty bottles of booze”, she wrote.

Some of the less offensive mess. Laurie S. Facebook

Laurie’s plea on the Facebook page includes photos of the damage, including some that appear to indicate the renter did not bother getting out of bed when the urge to attend the toilet occurred.

The Local, an online publication that specialises in English-language news from various countries, said Laurie S had since learned her apparently “nice” renter was in fact suffering from alcoholism and depression.

She estimates repairs will cost EUR 10,000 and says she is still trying to get money from Airbnb’s French offshoot.

Airbnb pays compensation when rental properties are damaged or trashed, as happens rarely. It estimates cases of damage at just 0.009% of the total. In one notorious US case, someone rented a mansion on behalf of a porn movie producer, who filmed a gay porn movie there and caused such damage, the property had to be cleaned, disinfected and fumigated.

In the Laurie S case, the renter who allegedly caused the damage has since been banned from using the app.
