574324Richard Offen, Executive Director of Heritage Perth has been announced as a finalist in the 2014 Western Australian Heritage Awards in the category of ‘Outstanding contribution to heritage by a professional in the heritage industry’.

Heritage Perth was set up to show the heritage of Perthin a positive light as a major social and economic asset.    Since being appointed to the role in 2006, Richard has worked tirelessly to promote heritage in all its forms.

Through a series of innovative projects, Heritage Perth has, and continues to demonstrate that heritage places can find a role in today’s society without losing either significance or historic value.   The annual Perth Heritage Days, that will be held in October in 2014, has grown from 6,000 visitations the first year, to over 40,000 in 2013, the fifth year of the event.

A new initiative launched in January is the ‘Walk & Talk Heritage: 2014 Series’ that offers people the chance to rediscover even more of the discovered. The first talk was fully booked within weeks of the announcement, and we expect the same response to the first walk in April.

Richard is currently on route to Portugal to attend REHAB 2014, the International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings and Structures.   He has been invited to Chair a session at the conference and also deliver a paper that demonstrates how Heritage Perth is engaging the public through its innovative activities.   It is a credit not only to Richard and Heritage Perth, but to the people of Perth who have so warmly embraced a new approach to getting our heritage better understood.
