unnamed (26)In a joyous demonstration of solidarity with Singapore on National Day (9 August 2014), a group of expats decided to get together and set up a stand at the Merlion Park near One Fullerton giving cupcakes out to locals and tourists alike – for free!

“I wanted to do something special for Singapore National Day,” said Kenneth McGuire, brainchild behind the idea. “I suggested the idea of giving cupcakes away for free to a couple of friends and everyone was so excited!” unnamed (27)

Around eight friends (from Australia, USA, Scotland, Germany and even Singapore) contributed to the event and baked over 150 homemade cupcakes with handmade Singapore flags in them. Four of the friends brought all the cupcakes to the Merlion at 12.30pm to give away.

“We wanted to give out cupcakes that were red and white – keeping in line with the Singapore flag colours so we chose to bake red velvet cupcakes with white icing,” said Laura Millett, key cupcake baker.

The cupcakes disappeared within 20 minutes of setting up.

“The response from the public was fantastic!” said Dana Urmonas, coordinator and cupcake baker. “Some people were weary that we were giving out cupcakes for free, but they quickly got over that and enjoyed them. It was an amazing feeling to see how happy such a small gesture could make people feel.”

Due to the success and great response from the public, the group plans to do another National Day Expat Cupcake Giveaway next year.
