Guangdong has all kinds of folk customs and festivals thanks to its diverse culture. During the Chinese New Year, tourists traveling in Guangdong may find local customs that vary from town to town.

The geographical and historical uniqueness endows Guangdong with a rich mixture of local customs, which are represented by three prominent clans, namely Guangfu, Hakka and Chaoshan. The diverse cultures here make Guangdong one of the best provinces in China for tourists to experience rich and unique local customs and festivals.

The Yingge dance of Puning, the human dragon dance of Leizhou, the fire dragon dance of Meizhou, the puppet parade of Shawan and the Long-Drum Dance of Shaoguan are all typical folk customs usually staged on winter festivals, reflecting the unique culture of Guangdong. During the Chinese New Year, major cities and most counties in Guangdong Province will launch festive activities that will last for at least half a month.

Events vary according to each city and region. Guangzhou will have lantern shows at Yuexiu Park and Guangfu temple fair; Shenzhen will have a temple fair at the Splendid China Folk Village; Foshan will celebrate the Lantern Festival in the waterside Xingtan County; Heyuan will launch its lantern festival, fishing festival and folk customs parade, and Chaozhou will present an Intangible Cultural Heritage Demonstration. In addition, lion dances, dragon dances, puppet parades, traditional opera shows and martial arts performances are all regular activities in most places of Guangdong during the Chinese New Year.
