On behalf of WellingtonNZ, I am delighted to share details of their first immersive live-action film experience, Second Unit, which is taking place from the 13th – 30th Juneand took it’s inspiration from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s vampire cult film, What We Do in the Shadows, which was set in Wellington too.

Taking place on a huge custom-built fictional set on Wellington’s Waterfront, Second Unit invites participants onto a chaotic behind-the-scenes fictional film set as the role of extras, to help wrap a film shoot of dysfunction crew.

It’s a mix between a choose-your-own-adventure video game, film set and music festival, where the audience is free to explore a wonderland of dance floors, green screens, secret rooms and unusual bars and interact with the 80 performers and crew.

Local production company, Tāwhiri’s Executive Director Meg Williams says participants can meet cameos from a few famous friends from the original What We Do in the Shadows and exclaims ”It’s an experience that can be enjoyed by both fans of the film and anyone looking for a freaky night out.”

Similar to New York’s Sleep No More and London’s Secret Cinema, this new annual event is not only the first one of it’s kind in the Southern Hemisphere but it’s also the first of it’s scale in New Zealand and has been scheduled to take place for the next 3 years, featuring a different film every year.
