Explore Tibet, a Lhasa-based tour company, is now offering a Tibet trekking trip from Ganden to Samye monasteries in 2014. The ten-day tour includes a visit to Lhasa, capital of Tibet.

“This is the one of the most challenging treks in Tibet,” Explore Tibet have said.

Gandan to Samye trekking

The trek covers 80 km through the Yarlung valley, from Ganden monastery to Samye monastery, the first ever Tibetan Buddhist monastery, en route crossing the steep and Shugar la pass (5250m) and Chitul la pass (5210m).

“Within the alpine green valleys, nomad families dwell in their black tents and tend their herds on the grassland,” Explore Tibet have said. “The natural lakes on the Chitul la pass are a source of streams which flow through the valley and the rocky surrounding is home for herds of wild goats. In May and June the valley is beautiful with blossoms of rhododendrons.”

The months of May to October are the best season to trek there. The summer months can be wet but the mountains are at their greenest and wild flowers spangle the meadows. Barring heavy snow, it’s also possible for those with a lot of trekking experience and the right gear to do this walk in the colder months.

Samye was Tibet’s first monastery and has a long history that spans over 1,200 years. The monastery has been damaged and restored many times throughout its long history. The most recent assault on its antiquity was during the Cultural Revolution. Extensive restoration work has been going on since the mid-198os and there are now over one hundred monks at Samye.

The monastery is designed to represent the Buddhist universe.

Located in the middle of the sandy Samye Valley, the monastery is approached via a river crossing.
