EXPO – 2017, Becomes the central Tourist Attraction

The World Conference “Tourism and Energy of Future: Unlocking Low-Carbon Growth Opportunities” began its work in Astana withing the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO-2017. The event was co-organised by the UNWTO in the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism.

The conference brought together more than 700 representatives of international organizations, NGO’s, travel companies and state agencies from 150 countries to explore new perspectives and innovative solutions for the tourism Industry.

During the opening ceremony, the JSC “NC Astana EXPO-2017” Chairman of the Board Akhmetzhan Yessimov, outlined that EXPO-2017 initiated by President  Nursultan Nazarbayev, outlined to introduce Kazakhstan to the world and provide a new impetus for comprehensive development of tourism. He expressed his hope that Nur-Alem sphere – a symbol of EXPO-2017 – would be one of the most recognizable landmarks around the world and the central tourist attraction.

Participants of the two day conference had the chance to discuss ways to reduce carbon emissions, promote competitiveness and sustainability of tourism as well as achieve the goals of the 2013 UN Agenda for Sustainability Development.

The UNWTO Secretary General, Taleb Rifai, said that the Astana EXPO-2017 was a platform for discussion and finding solutions for future energy in global tourism. He also believed that the international exhibition would help Astana to showcase itself as a world-class tourism destination.

Minister of Culture and Sports of Kazakhstan, Arystanbek Mukhamediuly, pointed out that tourism is one of the most rapidly-growing sectors of the world economy and its future depends on ability to integrate alternative energy technologies and promote sustainable developments.
