F-111 Lands at Fighter World

July 17, 2013 Attraction No Comments Email Email

Fighterworld F111A retired F-111 air force jet is the newest attraction at the Fighter World aircraft museum in Port Stephens.

Visitors can get a close-up view of the powerful 21-tonne F-111 and look into the cockpit of the fighter jet, which stretches 21m and can weigh up to 40 tonnes when fully laden with bombs.

Moved to Port Stephens by road recently from the RAAF Amberley base at Ipswich in Queensland, the fighter plane, numbered A8-148, was bought by the Australian air force for $30m in 1973 and was one of two F-111s involved in sinking a North Korean freighter used in an attempt to smuggle 150kg of heroin into Australia in 2003.

The legendary F-111s served Australia for 37 years before they were retired in 2010.Fighterworld5

Travelling at speeds of up to 2.8 mach – the equivalent of 3000kmh, the legendary jet bomber is set to make its mark in the Fighter World museum at the RAAF Williamtown air base next to Newcastle Airport in Port Stephens.

Fighter World is dedicated to preserving Australia’s air force heritage and is a not-for-profit organisation funded by admission fees and souvenir shop sales.

Fighter World boasts 15 other aircraft including the Gloster Meteor, Hawker Hunter and the de Havilland Vampire. The museum also offers a display of intricately designed model aeroplanes as well as a souvenir shop and café.

Fighterworld7An indoor attraction ideal in winter, Fighter World is open every day except Christmas Day from 10am to 4pm and entry is $12 for adults and $10 for children (aged 5-17), pensioners and seniors, with family tickets (two adults and an unlimited number of children from the same family) priced at $35.
