Fancy a splash? Little penguins take their first swimming lessons at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium

January 2, 2018 Attraction No Comments Email Email

Four Little Penguin chicks at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium are making quite the splash as they dive in for their first swimming lessons.

The weaning process closely follows what happens in the wild and the adorable chicks are all taking to the water like pros.

Libby Eyre, Senior Aquarist at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, said, “At five weeks of age the parents start to leave the chicks in the burrow for extended periods, at this state the chicks still have their downy baby plumage and must fledge. The team monitors the chicks within a dedicate crèche area,  where they are then introduced to feeding. After the chicks fledge, are eating well, and are a healthy weight we introduce them to swimming!

“The chicks are very good at watching what the other penguins do and they learn quickly from this. When swimming tests are complete and the chicks are preening, diving and comfortable we then release them to the colony. This video shows four of penguin chicks enjoying their first swimming lessons.”

All of the penguins have their own personalities. It’s even possible to tell who their parents are by looking at certain facial features and behaviours! The chicks integrate into the colony usually with no problems, and quickly learn to feed with everyone else. They even hop on the scales for weighing.  They are quite playful, especially when we are in cleaning their pool, and will zip around us and play chasings.
