About the Jan Powers Farmers Markets:

Almost 30 years ago an idea was born that was to change Brisbane.

Foodie, commentator and city doyenne Jan Power decided to forge the first Farmers Markets, putting pay to her passion for fresh produce, and her commitment supporting farmers and their livelihoods. The first Jan Powers Farmers Markets came to colourful and loud life at the Brisbane Powerhouse site; and today, almost a full generation later, Brisbane is a city indelibly inked with love for Farmers Markets.

Jan Powers Farmers Markets changed the shopping and purchase behaviours of Brisbane residents slowly, but surely. Jan singularly banged on and on, and pushed City regulations again and again to sow the seed of Farmers Markets, and educate Brisbane of the provenance of their food……..  Now, there is a Jan Powers Farmers Markets every single Saturday somewhere in Brisbane, plus there is a weekly City Markets in Reddacliff Place – a haven for city workers and residents; and gaining approvals for this breakthrough location was more than tough! Jan and now Sammy commitment to the true foundations of Farmers Markets remains as passionate today as it was 30 years ago, when no-one in Brisbane even knew what this concept meant!

Delivering on Jan’s vision, there’s more than just fresh produce at the Jan Power Farmers Markets – each is a place to connect with farmers, and there’s something for the kids to with the group’s Ground Force program showcasing where our produces comes from (and it’s not a milk carton or a grocery store shelf). With a feel good, grass roots experience with a real sense of community on offer, Jan Powers Farmers Market is Brisbane’s go-to for fresh farm produce, flowers, breads, artisan products, meat, fish, poultry, plants and organics. “Markets were the heart and soul of cities of old,” said Jan. “They were where families connected, where the city met and mingled, argued and loved; and the farmers markets are the modem day incarnation of this, therefore, they are at the heart and soul of Brisbane.”

Jan is now joined by daughter Sammy Power in running the markets. It’s in their blood – Great Grandfather T C Beirne had market stalls in Fortitude Valley more than a century ago.
