Fathom, the pioneer in social impact travel and Carnival Corporation’s 10th and newest brand, joins the fourth annual, national #GivingTuesday movement. A first of its kind effort that will harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners—charities, families, businesses and individuals — to inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities; give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support; and help create a better world.
Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources. With the power of social media and collaboration, #GivingTuesday creates a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are , synonymous with holiday shopping.
Fathom’s dedication to significant and sustainable social impact has inspired the company to join the movement. Beginning in April 2016 in the Dominican Republic, Fathom will send 704 travelers on every trip to work closely with initial lead impact partners, Entrena and the Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral, Inc. (IDDI). Fathom’s commitment and systematic partnership will help make a difference in the lives of people and communities in the Dominican Republic.
Fathom travelers will have the opportunity to work alongside local residents and these partner organizations on projects that focus on improving environmental, educational and economic conditions for the aspirational and hardworking people of the Dominican Republic. Specific examples include cultivating cacao plants at a nursery, assisting a local women’s cooperative in producing artisan chocolates, engaging in reforestation work to promote environmental efforts and supporting local youth through conversational English activities.
“We are proud for Fathom to join the movement this year and we encourage others to make a difference in their communities, as we intend for travelers to do in the Caribbean,” said Tara Russell, president of Fathom and global impact lead for Carnival Corporation. “Even a few days out of your busy life can make a lasting contribution to the wider world we live in.”
Whether donating time or money, #GivingTuesday addresses some of the social and environmental needs in the world and unites those ready to achieve holistic transformational societal contributions. Alongside #GivingTuesday and more than 30,000 organizations worldwide, Fathom is calling on community members around the world to make a difference and encourage the power of giving.
“#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. “The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.”
Seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, a group of friends and partners, led by the 92nd Street Y (92Y), came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. The movement reflects an estimated 470 percent increase in online donations since its inception in 2012 and continues to grow with more than 40 civic campaigns around the U.S. Additional information on #GivingTuesday can be found at www.givingtuesday.org.
