February At Salon İKSV

A leading performance venue offering new discoveries for those seeking alternative sounds in Istanbul since 2010, Salon İKSV is as vibrant as ever in February. The artists to take the stage at Salon are King Krule, Martin Kohlstedt, Hedonutopia and Son Feci Bisiklet.

Open Club Day: Mind Shifter & Club Bangkok / Saturday, 3 February, 21.30

Live music venues all over Europe open their doors on the same night. Open Club Day was held in Zurich for the first time, the event aims to familiarize audiences with the daily hassles behind the scenes of a live music venue. After five years in Zurich, the event is now handled by Live DMA and is expanded across Europe. Salon is the Turkish ambassador of the event, which aims to develop a conversation between venue crews and audiences, and emphasize the importance of live music in European culture. During the event, which is planned to be annual, the venue will open its doors for free performances. Two great free performances follow each other. One of the darlings of the local electronica scene which excels at instrumental synth-wave and synth-pop productions, Mindshifter’s sound resembles the soundtracks of sci-fi and steam punk films. After Mind Shifter, Club Bangkok, the innovative comedy dance duo clad in capes will be on the Salon stage back to back.

Garanti Jazz Green: King Krule / Wednesday-Thursday, 7-8 February, 21.30

British wunderkind Archy Marshall started producing in 2010 under the moniker Zoo Kid. Inspired by the Elvis Presley film King Creole, he began releasing his first works as King Krule. At the age of 19, he released his firstalbum 6 Feet Beneath the Moon in 2013. His unique sound which he cultivated by sifting through the genres that nourished him throughout his life had flourishes of punk jazz, hip-hop, trip-hop, post-punk, and indie-rock. At the end of 2015, he released a hip-hop album under his own name that contained illustrations, essays, and a short documentary. He accompanied Mount Kimbie in many of their songs. He heralded his new album The OOZ by releasing new tracks towards the end of 2017.One of the most talented names in the alternative music and hip-hop scene that we have witnessed for several years, King Krule is in Istanbul at Salon İKSV for the first time as part of his tour to support the album.

%100 Metal: Laneth Bir Gece 2 / Saturday, 10 February, 20.30

A homage to the 90’s cult fanzine, Laneth, in which now rock diva of Turkey, Şebnem Ferah, made her first cover appearance, the one and only Ska band of Turkey, Athena, gave their first interview, and which brought together youngsters who gave their hearts to heavy metal from all over the country in times when mobile phones or the Internet hadn’t been invented yet. A sequel to the reunion of bands that owe their fame to Laneth Bir Gece at Salon İKSV in 2017, this night will see louder volumes. The night will feature The Climb’s come-back after 11 years of silence; Tünay Akdeniz who gave her last performance as the opening act of Erkin Koray in 1975 and has just released a record compilation entitled The Godfather of Turkish Punk; Rashit who will take the stage with the same crew behind his first album dated 1999, Telaşa Mahal Yok; Asafated with their heated and complete performance of their 1999 EP Tout Va Bien, recorded with a highly progressive sound and approach for a death metal band; Murder King who will be returning to the stages through this night, and Razor with cover performances of the Ankara-based band Hazy Hill, who have been missing from stages for 20 years. The night will continue with a DJ set from Nikki Wild.

Ahmet Ali Arslan ‘Günaşığı’ Launch Concert / Wednesday, 14 February, 21.30

Singer and lyricist Ahmet Ali Arslan released his debut album proper called Günaşığı (Dayadorer) that employs more folkloric sounds after two EPs issued under Müzik Hayvanı label and plenty of concerts at various venues in Istanbul. The album is recorded by Z Müzik/Kalan, and since Arslan is inspired by Turkish classical and folk music, his singing is informed by contemporary sensibilities. Ahmet Ali Arslan will visit Salon İKSV to introduce his new album Günaşığı which rings with touches of traditional music on top of his urban songwriting style.

Hedonutopia ‘Yarı Cennet’ Launch Concert / Friday, 16 February, 22.00

One of the most exciting names of the local alternative scene, Hedonutopia was formed in İzmir and relocated to Istanbul. With their sound that marries rock and electronica with touches of ‘90s shoegaze and resembles the defining bands of music history such as Radiohead, Dead Can Dance, Sigur Rós, and The Cure, they have a pretty unique style for the local scene. Their slow and steady approach has finally paid off with their 2016 debut album Ucube Dizayn (Freaky Design) and their surprise sophomore effort Yarı Cennet (Half a Heaven) in 2017 announced them as a force to be reckoned with. The band, whose melancholic songs now sound more major, will be burning through their brand new songs live for the first time on the Salon İKSV stage.

Son Feci Bisiklet / Saturday, 17 February, 22.30

Indie band from Ankara, Son Feci Bisiklet was formed in 2013. With their first EP Son Feci (The Last Awful) they quickly stole the hearts of followers of the local scene and became one of its leading names. After releasing their first LP Vesaire (Et cetera) in 2015, they practically played at every festival and venue there is. They spent the last quarter of 2017 touring, following the release of their sophomore album Kötü Şeyler (Bad Things). Their devoted fan base, which they amassed throughout the years, never left them alone in their hectic touring schedule. The band will be on the Salon İKSV stage for the first time in a year. 

Evren Uysal ‘Güzel Şeyler Söyle’ Launch Concert / Tuesday, 20 February, 21.30

Lead singer and songwriter Evren Uysal released albums as FOMA’s lead singer and songwriter. He worked with Apocalyptica and İmer Demirer. One of the screen faces of the Turkish DreamTV and the host of Dream News. He will be on the Salon İKSV stage for the first time, introducing his recently released new album Güzel Şeyler Söyle (Say Nice Things).

minimalismus+: Martin Kohlstedt / Wednesday, 21 February, 21.30

German pianist and experimental composer Martin Kohlstedt concentrated on his solo career following his studies in jazz piano and visual arts. In addition to his contributions to the German electronic music scene, he composed music for film, theatre and audio-books. He constantly reveals his soul in every one of his moves and every note he plays. After visiting Istanbul last year with XJAZZ, he will be on the Salon İKSV stage with songs from his new album, Strom.

Tickets for Salon İKSV’s new season can be purchased from Biletix sales channels and the box office at İKSV (without service charge, every day, except for Sundays, between 10.00-18.00).
