Cultural institutions are recognising the contribution they can make to the local tourism industry for the industry’s benefit and their own, ongoing viability, says the former head of Tourism at the Sydney Opera House.

Speaking ahead of next month’s ATEC Symposium event to be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre (6-7 June), Partner at industry consultancy Sandwalk Partners, Simon Spellicy says this change of attitude is important to the future success of cultural institutions.

“In recent years, cultural institutions have needed to move from being reliant on government funding and recognise a more commercial model can be the answer. This is a challenge for some who see a commercial imperative as being at odds with their primary artistic or cultural purpose” Mr Spellicy said.

“They are being driven to reconcile their artistic vision with the new commercial reality and this should be seen as a real positive.”

Mr Spellicy, formerly the General Manager of Tourism at Sydney Opera House, and his Partners at Sandwalk, helped spearhead the new focus on tourism and commercially viable operations for the Australian icon.

“The Opera House, like many cultural institutions, overcame resistance to a commercial model when the realities of diminishing government funding forced a significant shift in thinking.

“This meant we were able to find a way to engage tourism, F&B and retail as significant revenue drivers and make the experience consistent with the core artistic values of the institution.

“Cultural institutions that depend on big selling, high profile events such as exhibitions or major festivals, have to contend with a feast or famine business cycle. There is a real opportunity to build greater connection with the tourism industry in order to maintain the level of consistent visitation that can help them break out of this cycle.”

Mr Spellicy says Industry research clearly shows cultural tourists spend more, stay longer and research their destination before travelling.

“Branding and promoting our cultural assets by building the desire in visitors to see and experience them, is an effective way to increase visitation across the board.

“Visitors are attracted to places that are lively with a strong cultural life because they know they can turn up at any time and have a worthwhile cultural and tourism experience- of course all of this adds strength to a destination’s brand.

“Australia has the cultural assets, we just need to package them and promote them to make them more accessible.

“This is a real opportunity for the tourism industry to reach out to their local cultural institutions and find ways to bundle experiences with tourism product to help make both sectors strong and sustainable.”
ATEC Symposium will take place at the Adelaide Convention Centre on 4-7 June.

A year after launching the African Business Aviation Association (AfBAA), Chairman Tarek Ragheb has today announced it will be launching AfBAA Expo.

This completely new event will be focused solely on the African Business Aviation sector and will run in conjunction with the Marrakech Airshow 23 – 26 April 2014. The formal agreement was signed at EBACE, by Tarek Ragheb and Frédéric Le Hénaff Exhibition Director of the Marrakech Airshow. Under the terms of the agreement, both organizations will work together to offer the African Business Aviation community a truly integrated event representing the complete spectrum of the continent’s current, and potential, Business Aviation activity.

The show, which will be located at Marrakech’s FRA Airport, will cover 50,000 square meters and will feature chalets for those wishing to host corporate hospitality and booths for exhibitors to display their products. With an extensive apron space there will also be an expansive static display which situated adjacent to the runway will enable fixed wing and rotary exhibitors to have easy take off and landing capability for demonstration flights for potential customers. As an international airport and also a military base, exhibitors as well as visitors will benefit from the distinct advantages of a high level of security, straightforward logistical operations and excellent access control to the AfBAA Expo area.

The show has been initiated in response to demand from AfBAA members and the African Business Aviation market in general which does not currently have a dedicated Business Aviation exhibition or conference. It is anticipated that the newly created AfBAA Expo will provide a lively sales and transaction show room for OEMs that are increasingly optimistic about aircraft sales across the African continent. It will also offer a forum for all African Business Aviation stakeholders to exchange views, share knowledge and experience. Marrakech was selected as the venue owing to its ease of access from Africa, Europe and the Middle East which will support visitor numbers.

This will be the first time that Marrakech Airshow will have an integrated Business Aviation component and reflects the growing importance of the sector to the African continent. Previously the event has focused more on the African civil and military aircraft sectors but in parallel with AfBAA’s philosophy, the organisers recognise the significant contribution the executive jet sector makes to the economic development of the African continent.

“AfBAA is extremely active on behalf of our members and African Business Aviation in general and the launch of this event will be an historic moment for Business Aviation in Africa,” commented Ragheb. “The Association’s commitment to launch a dedicated show demonstrates AfBAA’s pledge to bring together African aviation companies from a wide variety of sectors. It is an exciting proposition for AfBAA to be collaborating with a prestigious Airshow like Marrakech and we know it will be a great success,” he continued.

The concept was initially suggested in March when AfBAA held its first general meeting of the year in Rabat. “The fact that our Executive Team led by Rady Fahmy was able to transform the idea into an agreement in less than three months shows excellent execution and strong leadership from our Board. This underlines AfBAA’s capabilities to efficiently and professionally support new ideas on behalf of its members” commented Ragheb

Frédéric Le Hénaff, Exhibition Director of Marrakech Airshow adds, “Whilst the commercial side of aviation has been struggling on the African continent the business aircraft market in Africa is expanding rapidly. We see African Business Aviation attracting investors and interest from across the globe which is why we’re delighted to work with AfBAA and to host AfBAA Expo in 2014. Business Aviation has not been our main focus for the first three editions and it will certainly add extra value for our regular visitors.”

NB – AfBAA will be exhibiting at EBACE booth number 2135 where it will also be co-hosting Founding Members Bestfly, Dalia Air, Evergreen Apple Nigeria, Z-Aviation Services (ZAS)

The African Business Aviation Association (AfBAA) announced today at EBACE 2013, that JETNET, the leading international data and analysis company for commercial and business aircraft worldwide, has become its 20th Founding Member.

“We are delighted to welcome JETNET to our growing family,” said Rady Fahmy, Executive Director, AfBAA. JETNET joins a strong line up of members and brings valuable intelligence and data to our expanding Association.”

“JETNET salutes the mission and vision of AfBAA and we are committed to play a role in realizing its success,” said Karim Derbala, Exclusive Agent, EMEA. “We are confident that JETNET’s specialized research in the worldwide business aviation industry will provide the Association with a head start in regard to pertinent market intelligence in this fast emerging continent”

He reports that JENET has seen a 35% growth in the total fleet of aircraft based, operated and owned in the African continent these past five years. With a total 1,425 business aircraft based in Africa effective May 2013 the top 10 leading countries by number operated are: South Africa; Kenya; Nigeria; Angola; Tanzania; Egypt; Morocco; Botswana; Algeria and Zambia. Underlining this, numerous African based companies now feature in the top 10 worldwide civilian fleet operators of various wholly owned makes and models of business jets and turboprops, according to JETNET’s statistical analysis reports (STAR).

“While the aviation market research in some of these emerging countries has proven to be challenging owing to the lack of basic infrastructure as well as the absence of an established regulatory environment, JETNET has been continuously striving to monitor and reflect this dynamic market and industry changes as they happen through its 25 years of experience in business aviation market research,” said Derbala. “We will continue to do so, through our mandate as the latest founding member within the African Business Aviation Association.”

The decision to invite JETNET to become a Founding Member was a strategic one on behalf of the Association as the data expert’s membership will add considerable value to future planned research projects. “The need for sourcing professional research and reliable data from Africa sits at the core of AfBAA’s goals. JETNET’s credibility in researching and handling data within the business aviation sector is second to none,” said Fahmy about the latest member. It is anticipated that JETNET will steer the committee that will be responsible for overseeing the extensive research project agreed at this year’s general meeting in Rabat. The research will aim to establish the key areas of African Business Aviation that require major improvement and will make suggestions on how to best advocate for these changes.

Just like other inaugural members JETNET will retain membership until 2015. It will also adhere to the guiding principles, which focus on advocacy, safety, security, integrity, service and training. Launch Members will also have a strong voice within the association and will be responsible for contributing to the future of the Association’s activity.

The partnership heralds the first hotel collaboration between leading hospitality industry innovators, Sam Nazarian, Founder, Chairman and CEO of sbe, and restaurateurs/developers Larry Levy and Bob Heyat.

Located on Collins Ave. and 18th, The Redbury South Beach represents the encore to the award-winning Redbury Hotel at Hollywood and Vine, which has earned rave reviews from press and guests alike for its distinctive design and experience. Since its debut in 2010, The Redbury Hollywood has earned numerous accolades, including “Top 10 Hippest LA Hotels” by USA Today, Travel + Leisure’s “2011 Best New Hotels” list and US News and World Report’s “2013 Best Hotel’s in Los Angeles” list to name just a few.

Formerly the Fairfax Hotel, re-development on The Redbury South Beach will be completed by early fall of 2013, with a design inspired by its Hollywood roots, yet adapted to capture the art deco aesthetic of South Beach. Once complete, The Redbury South Beach will feature 69 rooms and suites. sbe Hotel Group will operate the hotel while Levy Restaurants will oversee food and beverage for the lobby level restaurant, Lorenzo. There will also be a 12,000-square-foot rooftop pool and event space with food and beverage service. Situated across the street from sbe’s SLS Hotel and The Raleigh, The Redbury’s guests of will have exclusive access to both properties’ amenities, including beach and pool access and access to the spa and Privé Salon.

“Larry and I share a love for South Beach and we believe The Redbury brand closely connects with the energy and culture of the area,” said Nazarian. “Advancing sbe’s relationship with one of my mentors, Larry, along with his Levy Restaurants, is an incredible opportunity that will position The Redbury for sustained success. Leveraging our shared expertise across real estate development, top-notch hospitality service and overall brand experience will enable us to create a product that resonates powerfully with both the local and global South Beach communities.”

“Sam and sbe have developed a truly innovative approach to creating hospitality experiences that appeal to today’s global clientele,” added Levy. “Together, we’ve brought some incredible projects to life in the past and there is no doubt in my mind that The Redbury South Beach will be the next hottest spot to open in Miami this year.”

Lorenzo, helmed by cookbook author and James Beard Award-winning Chef Tony Mantuano, will be a casual elegant Italian restaurant offering Chef’s signature authentic cuisine. The restaurant will offer hand-made pastas, pizzettas from the Italian-imported wood-burning oven, entrees off the grill, house-made gelato, Italian caffè and more. Lorenzo will pair the food with Italian wines, champagne and sparkling wines and has also tapped celebrity mixologist Michael Jack Pazdon from Napa Valley’s Goose & Gander to drive the cocktail program. This will be Chef Mantuano’s first restaurant in Miami, adding to his four restaurants in Chicago: the four-star Spiaggia, which is nominated for “Outstanding Restaurant” in the 2013 James Beard Foundation Awards; Cafe Spiaggia, the casual sibling to Spiaggia; Bar Toma, a neighborhood bar and pizzeria; and Terzo Piano, a modern take on Mediterranean cuisine at the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Levy Restaurants is a James Beard and Ivy Award-winning company that transformed dining at major sporting and entertainment venues across the country. Levy was recently named one of the top 10 most innovative companies in sports by Fast Company magazine. The company’s diverse portfolio includes numerous restaurants, sports and entertainment venues across the U.S. In Miami, Lorenzo will be the company’s latest addition after AmericanAirlines Arena and Marlins Park.

“sbe is deeply committed to Miami and to the historic art deco architecture of South Beach,” added Arash Azarbarzin, President sbe Hotel Group. “We’re applying the same thoughtful and collaborative approach to adaptive reuse we employed at SLS South Beach to Redbury, and are creating a property the entire community can be proud of and make their own. Ultimately, the goal is to once again make the block between 17th and 18th South Beach’s center of energy and with SLS and now Redbury we’re doing just that.”

The launch of The Redbury South Beach underscores sbe’s recent growth in the Miami area over the past 18 months. In addition to The Redbury, sbe has recently opened the highly successful SLS Hotel South Beach, Hyde Lounge AmericanAirlines Arena, acquired the iconic Raleigh Hotel and opened the first East Coast outpost of Umami Burger. In addition to Lorenzo, guests of The Redbury will have access to sbe’s award-winning food and beverage offerings including The Bazaar by José Andrés, Katsuya by Starck, Hyde Beach and Restaurant Michael Schwartz at The Raleigh. Additionally, sbe recently announced plans for SLS Hotel & Residences Brickell set to open in 2016.
