Aussies can expect Fridays and Saturdays in December to be twice as hard to get from A to B. According to GoCatch data from December 2014, Fridays saw a 60% increase in ride requests, and a whopping 100% (double) increase on Saturdays throughout the month, in comparison to other days of the week.
GoCatch’s CEO Ned Moorfield says, “We now have a fleet of over 35,000 registered taxi drivers – so the odds of booking a ride through GoCatch are pretty good.
“GoCatch was born out of our own frustration at the taxi industry in Australia. We knew there was a better way to connect cabbies with passengers, and give Aussies more control and certainty over their ride. But with the spikes we see in rides on weekends in December, Aussies need to play it safe and plan ahead.”
As the festive season swings into action, Ned has SIX SIMPLE RULES to get help Aussies through the Christmas and New year festivities.
TIP #1: Plan ahead in peak-periods
Thinking of simply strolling out to the street and catching a cab between the hours of 8.00-9.00am or 6.00-7.00pm? Think again. These are thebusiest times for taxi drivers – especially during December and the New Year.
Plan ahead, be patient, be nice and have an egg-nogg.
TIP #2: Be mindful of the busiest ’burbs
|SYDNEY SUBURBS DEMANDING THE MOST CABS
(Locations where rides more likely to occur between 10pm-5am)
|The Rocks||Wollstonecraft||Sydney CBD||Summer Hill|
|Milsons Point||Cremorne||The Rocks||Eastwood|
|Sydney South||Summer Hill||Dee Why||Willoughby|
|Castle Hill||Concord||Sydney South||Cronulla|
|Olympic Park||Five Dock||Millers Point||Cremorne|
|Haymarket||North Ryde||Milsons Point||Hunters Hill|
|Crows Nest||Lane Cove||Hunters Hill||Concord|
|MELBOURNE SUBURBS DEMANDING THE MOST CABS|
|Melbourne CBD||Malvern East||Docklands||Ascot Vale|
|Cheltenham||Brighton East||Brunswick East||Surrey Hills|
TIP #3: Gratuity gets you going
If you’re in a hurry or loaded up with presents, try adding a small gratuity for the driver when booking through goCatch to increase your chances of confirming a ride. After all, it is Christmas.
TIP #4: Call your driver
Personal directions always make it clearer as to where you’re waiting. Cross streets and landmarks are also really useful. Even relaying what you’re wearing and a description of yourself so the driver can spot you quickly can help.
TIP #5: New Year’s can be a no-go
The busiest day of the year for cabbies is New Year’s Day (especially the early hours of the morning), and the average fare jumps to $48, from the regular average of $36 per ride and GoCatch ensures no crazy surcharges.
TIP #6: Remember, appearances count
If you’re standing on the footpath, making a scene or being obscene, then you’re unlikely to get a ride. Play it cool and you’ll catch a ride. (NOTE: travelers dressed in gorilla suits also don’t tend to appeal to taxi drivers..)
GoCatch’s festive Freebies – FreeCatch?
The good people at goCatch have come up with a little pick-me-up. In this case, literally…
This December, as part of goCatch’s FreeCatch project, the taxi booking app is dispatching branded taxis to the streets of Sydney, and giving away FREE RIDES, at random, to passengers who book through the app every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until the 19th of December.
