Ferocious daylight attack stuns Bondi beachgoers

One of the world’s most famous stretches of sand and an Australian icon, Bondi Beach was the scene of a violent assault in broad daylight yesterday, with Bondi Rescue’s Anthony ‘Harries’ Carroll among those quickly on the scene tending to the victim.

Police established a crime scene at the beach after a gang of men – described as tall Caucasians, bare-chested, wearing board shorts and carrying axes and nail-studded cudgels – arrived in a white Mercedes and launched an attack on a male victim.

Onlookers were astounded such an assault could occur in broad daylight on a summer afternoon when the beach was crowded with families and tourists enjoying a day out.

The attack happened about 1.15pm, when the victim, a man said to be aged 34, was reportedly sitting with a woman on a grassy park area at the north end of the beach.

After bashing the victim, the assailants fled into the waiting Mercedes as onlookers rushed after them.

Police were last night appealing for witnesses. “Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or have information that could assist, should contact officers at Eastern Suburbs Local Area Command,” a statement said.
