egtmedia59A lengthy delay to a Cathay Pacific flight at Hong Kong International Airport made a married couple so angry that the husband poured a can of soft drink over two of the airline’s counter staff while his wife attacked and injured a police officer.

The tale of the two irate passengers emerged in a Hong Kong Magistrate’s Court, which heard that Xu Jun, 35, and his wife Wan Yejun, 34, had been travelling together when their flight was affected HH250x250-3by a long delay.

Xu and Wan were supposed to board flight CX364 to Shanghai at 5.35pm on Friday, but air traffic control problems in Shanghai repeatedly delayed the flight, the South China Morning Post reported.

The flight was eventually delayed by 16 hours, but it took less than four hours for the couple to grow very angry. At about 9pm, Xu – increasingly impatient with the delay – approached Cathay counter staff at the gate and vented his anger by flinging a computer keyboard to the ground. When two Cathay employees tried to calm him, he poured soft drink over them, police said.

Quoting Chinese media, the paper said that police appeared on the scene only to face the wrath of Xu’s wife Wan. As Xu was arrested, Wan became belligerent and struck a police officer in the back, causing injury.

Result: Xu was convicted of criminal damage and common assault and fined HKD 2000 (AUD 281). Wan was convicted of assaulting a police officer and fined HKD 2500 dollars (AUD 351). Both had pleaded guilty.

The flight finally took off at 9am on Saturday – after a 16 hour delay.
