Fighter jet shadows passenger plane over bomb threat

August 7, 2014 Aviation, Headline News 2 Comments Email Email

egtmedia59Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) scrambled a Typhoon fighter jet to escort a Qatar Airways Airbus A330-300 into Manchester Airport yesterday after the crew received a threat about a suspect device on the flight.

The threat is suspected to have been a hoax, but in such cases crew and ground authorities treat it as genuine until proved otherwise.

Apparently someone aboard the flight from Qatar handed cabin crew a note, which was quickly passed on the captain. The captain alerted air traffic controllers and a fully armed quick-reaction Typhoon jet was scrambled into action.

The A330 had 282 people aboard and the RAF plane was a Typhoon from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported.

Officers met the plane as it landed and police removed a passenger. Shortly afterwards, Greater Manchester Police confirmed the arrest was related to a suspected hoax.

Passengers said they had no idea they were being shadowed by a Typhoon until they landed and found out through texts or social media.

The airport was closed for around half an hour while flights were diverted to Leeds Bradford and Liverpool.

“A man who was onboard the plane at @manairport has been arrested on suspicion of making a hoax bomb threat,” Manchester police later tweeted.

oh to be seen to be doing something….. What could a fighter jet do except follow the airliner ?

  2. Bill Abbott says:

its best to be seen doing something than do nothing at all.
the person causing the problem must have been a crack pot.
