In an effort to take the international event to another level, as well as to promote Fiji as a golf tourism hotspot in the Pacific region, Fiji Airways signed on as the Official Airline of the Fiji International.

The new partnership singing took place at a press conference held at the Sheraton Fiji Resort between Fiji Airways, Fiji International, in the presence of the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism (MITT), Honourable Faiyaz Koya.

The Fijian Government signed a five-year Agreement in April 2014 with the PGA of Australia to host the first-ever internationally sanctioned golf tournament in Fiji.  Welcoming the partnership, Honourable Koya says that the Fijian Government is investing F$8.6M into the Fiji International.

“The Fiji International and Fiji Tourism brands combined generated a gross media value of close to F$20M.  This can be translated as a return on investment by the Fiji Government of approximately 64%,” Honourable Koya says.

The daily spend of a golf tourist whilst on holiday is normally twice that of a general leisure tourists. Golf is a sport that can extend the high season for tourism in Fiji.

“In terms of international marketing and exposure, the Fiji International is broadcast to over 400 million people across 27 countries, and marketing tournament partners such as Flight Centre to more than 2 million people, with a total television coverage equated to 462 hours – 46% of which was televised live in 2014,” Tourism Fiji’s Executive Chair and Acting CEO, Truman Bradley says.

There are an estimated 80 million golfers worldwide and more than 40,000 golf courses around the world. Golf events are estimated to be worth 2 billion dollars a year and the golf tourism market something more than 1 billion dollars.

The Fiji International will be held at the impressive Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from 15-18 October 2015.
