The Red Bull Sailing Team dominated competition during the final act of the Extreme Sailing Series on Sydney Harbour, with the team led by dual Olympic gold medallists Roman Hagara (AUT) and Hans Peter Steinacher (AUT) claiming four of the seven races they competed in on Sunday.
The international crew finished in third place at the Sydney event, leaving them in third place in the season’s overall standings on 70 points, after The Wave Muscat (87) and SAP (74).
The battle for second place for this week and in the overall standings came down to the final race of the day – worth double points – with Red Bull needing to beat SAP by two places or more to snare the runner-up finish. While the Red Bull team impressed with four race wins on the day , it wasn’t enough to overhaul the advantage they had given up earlier in the week.
The Extreme Sailing Series returns in March with the season opener in Oman followed by seven stops around the globe including the season finale in Sydney. The teams will move from the Extreme 40 to the dynamic foiling GC32’s and will again feature some of the best sailors on the planet.
