Finalists announced for Nikon Surf Photo of the Year

The top 20 finalists for the Nikon Surf Photo of the year & Surf Video of the Year 2018 have been announced. The Nikon Surf Photo of the Year award, in partnership with Surfing Australia, is an extremely prestigious opportunity for surf photographers of all levels of ability to have their work recognized and celebrated.

The 2018 Nikon Surf Photo of the Year Award – recognizes the best single surfing-themed image taken by an Australian in 2017. Although entrants need to be Australian residents, the submitted photos can be taken anywhere around the world and can be drawn from action, lifestyle/portrait, or scenic photography.

The Nikon Surf Video of the Year Award celebrates the best surf video of any length or format released in 2017 and filmed, produced or directed by an Australian citizen or resident.

The finalists for the 2017 Nikon Surf Video of the Year are:

·       Maurice Cole by Peter Baker

·       The Big Wave Project by Tim Bonython

·       The Church of the Open Sky by Nathan Oldfield

The entries were judged on the following criteria:

  • Innovation and creativity
  • Dramatic affect and sensory impact
  • Uniqueness
  • Composition of the photo

A panel of 13 high-profile judges from within the surfing industry, including Nikon’s partner in the project – Surfing Australia – were tasked with selecting the winning surfing photo & video based on a range of strict criteria. The winners are to be announced on stage next Tuesday evening, March 6th at QT Gold Coast.
