Finding the perfect places for your motorhome in the land of the long white cloud – New Zealand

October 16, 2014 Global Travel Media TV, Headline News No Comments Email Email

EGT mediaTVWhen I was planning on heading over to New Zealand recently, as you do, I began giving some thought to where to stay, how to travel around and what to do.

I thought of hotels, B&B’s, cottages or “batches” as they call them in NZ, to stay, but when the incredibly popular motorhome option came to mind, for some reason and I don’t know why, but I was not very keen.

unnamed (11)Perhaps my lack of interest in motorhomes was a legacy from my childhood, when our whole family travelled around Europe in a small motor home, in very cramped conditions, nevertheless I continued my research and that is when the opportunity to secure a luxury motor home from Iconic Motor Homes www.iconicmotorhomes.com came along and after I checked out their web site, having an Iconic Motor Homes motorhome was clearly going to be a different story and experience!

Things then started getting even better because I found the amazing Colleen Hammonds and her unique to New Zealand and wonderful, motor home overnight stop web site,www.okay2stay.co.nz

Okay2stay is Colleen’s creation, because in 2012, Colleen and husband Dave hired a motorhome and travelled in the United States, but they also joined an organisation called Harvest Hosts, which enabled them to park overnight for free at berry farms, lavender farms and even a date farm in an oasis right on the edge of Death Valley.

unnamed (12)Not long after she arrived back from the US,www.okay2stay.co.nz was born and is quite simply the most amazing site that provides its members with information about great, unique and “non-touristy” locations to stay in New Zealand, specially designed for holidaymakers travelling in self-contained motorhomes or campervans.

The most amazing part is that these places to stop overnight are mostly small gourmet producers such as wineries, olive groves, lavender farms, cheese makers etc. with the hosts welcoming one or two self-contained motorhomes onto their property for a single night, free of charge.

A motorhome must comply with strict conditions in order to be certified as self-contained and there must be a toilet and washing facilities, as well as holding tanks for fresh and waste water, with if you hire a motorhome in New Zealand and it is equipped with a toilet, shower and waste water facilities, it will almost certainly have a Self-Containment Certificate and display a green Responsible Camper sticker.

Quite amazingly, the cost of joining Okay2stay is $45 New Zealand dollars giving access to the members’ only area on www.okay2stay.co.nz for one year, with staying two nights with Okay2stay hosts recovering your accommodation costs.

unnamed (13)I love meeting real people in the countries I visit and with www.okay2stay.co.nz that is exactly what happens, with all Okay2stay’s hosts committed to their land and the production of quality products, loving what they do and meeting with guests, but as Colleen explained, they aren’t in it for entertainment as they need to make a living.

So, as a member of Okay2stay they welcome you to stay to overnight and to take a look, but also purchase and enjoy some of their delicious produce, with what you will find are boutique and artisan producers, vineyards, breweries, olive growers, lavender and berry growers, hand-made cheese makers, nut farmers, fruit and vegetable producers, organic producers, beekeepers, gourmet sausages, … and more!

Not only do they grow this delicious produce, but they turn it into a mouth-watering array of preserves, chutneys, jams, pickles, sweets, ice creams, lotions and sometimes, potent brews!
