Fire! Big blaze rips through Thai backpacker quarter

February 8, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

An exploding gas canister is believed to have triggered a huge fire that spread rapidly throughout houses and tourist accommodation on the Thai island of Phi Phi, a popular destination for young Australian travellers.

Five people were reported injured but there were no deaths, despite their being hundreds of people in the area when the fire broke out.

About 200 tourists and locals joined forces to battle the inferno that burned through 25 houses and lodges late on Tuesday night, Thailand’s The Nation English-language news outlet reported.

Police said two Brazilian tourists and three Thais were hurt. Two were discharged after being treated at Koh Phi Phi Hospital.

The source of the fire was said locally to have been a gas canister explosion in or near the October Hostel in the main Phi Phi Don village, in a street known locally as Soi Slinky. The area has plenty of bars and is a well-known backpacker party scene.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said no Australians had been injured.
