Fire in Sydney hits Jetstar services in Oz and NZ

A fire in Telstra’s Chatswood Exchange in Sydney yesterday delayed Jetstar flights across Australia and New Zealand as it shut down the airline’s IT services.

“Jetstar has experienced some issues with its IT systems this afternoon due to a Telstra outage,” the airline tweeted.

“Our IT systems are coming back online at major airports, including Melbourne and Sydney. There have been some disruptions to flights, and manual check-in was used at several airports during the outage.

“We appreciate this is frustrating for customers and we’re working hard to get everyone on their way as soon as possible. We will provide regular updates to customers as information comes to hand.”

The systems were coming back online by mid afternoon. Jetstar said nine services were affected, though it’s unclear whether that included New Zealand, where the outage was reported to have hit some airports, though it spared Auckland.

Fairfax in New Zealand reported that Jetstar passengers in Christchurch, many heading to a Guns N’ Roses concert in Wellington last night, were unable to board their plane in the afternoon.

They finally did so, but takeoff was delayed by about an hour and a quarter.

The Sydney Chatswood Exchange fire caused outages to Telstra mobile phone services throughout Australia and halted train services on the NSW Hunter line.

Even weirder, it caused the personal SMS messages of some Telstra customers to be sent at random to recipients on competing networks across Australia. That will worry a lot of people even more than disruptions to their flights.
