Today marks the first Singapore Airlines Capital Express flight, the new route connecting the capital cities of Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.The first leg of flight is set to depart Wellington at 9.15pm on a Monday, Wednesday, Fridayand Sunday and will arrive in Canberra at 10.05pm. The flight will then pick up again at11.30pm for a next day arrival in Singapore at 5.50am. The return journey will leave Singapore at 11pm on a Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and reach Canberra by8.35am the next day. It will then continue to Wellington, arriving at 4.05pm.
Travellers will be able to book a seat on the entire 13 hour journey or for the Singapore-Canberra or Canberra-Wellington leg of the journey.
The new route will add an additional 110,000 seats in and out of Wellington, with a 10 percent boost to Wellington Airport’s international capacity.
Since the flight was announced in January, ties between Wellington and Canberra have never been stronger. In July, the two capitals became official ‘sister cities’.
Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) CEO Chris Whelan says the new flight will give Wellington the best international connectivity it’s ever had.
“Canberra and Wellington have a lot in common. Our two cities are bustling hubs of business and government and this new flight route will undoubtedly strengthen our tourism and trade ties.
