First U.S. Tourism Service Jam to Take Place on November 7th at the 2nd International Service Design + Tourism Conference

What do you get when you mix a group of designers, students, academics, business people, entrepreneurs, and others inspired by the opportunity to co-create brand new services in the course of a single day?

A Service Jam, that’s what! When the theme around which they will gather is tourism, and the Jam is led by a founder of the Global Sustainability Jams and the man who literally wrote the book on service design, you get the first Tourism Service Jam ever hosted in the United States.

The Tourism Service Jam will be held on Thursday, November 7 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at 002SteveCafe&Cuisine250x250the Ringling College of Art and Design’s Roskamp Exhibition Hall in Sarasota. The event is part of the 2nd International Service Design + Tourism Conference, SDT 2013. Leading the Jam will be Markus Hormess of service design consultancy Work Play Experience and Marc Stickdorn, editor of This is Service Design Thinking and co-founder of smaply, a provider of digital tools for service designers. Hormess and Stickdorn are veteran service designers and have led or participated in jams all over the world.

Much like the musical jam it borrows from, a service jam brings together diverse participants in a spirit of experimentation, innovation, co-operation and friendly competition. Teams are formed to develop and prototype completely new services inspired by a shared theme that will be disclosed the morning of the event.

“Our goal is to get the Jammers focused on ‘doing, not talking,’ said Stickdorn. “In just 8 hours, they will learn how to define service challenges, research, ideate, and prototype new services. These productive working techniques will help individuals and teams to speed up the innovation process.”

The Tourism Service Jam is open to all who wish to participate. No special skills are needed – just lots of energy and an open mind. Lunch, snacks and beverages will be provided. The event is free for registered attendees of the SDT2013 Conference and $30.00 for those not registered for the conference. Registration is open and may be found online here.

“Service design is one of the hottest trends in design for business today,” said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of Ringling College of Art and Design and host of SDT 2013. “This approach, which uses design methods to improve services and customer experience, is already big in Europe but gaining momentum in the U.S. This Jam and the conference afford participants the opportunity to get ahead of their competition and learn from some of the world’s leading service designers and customer experience champions.”

SDT 2013 will offer three full days of keynotes, breakout sessions, workshops and networking events designed to give attendees a raft of new ideas for reinventing their organizations’ services or innovating new ones. It is sponsored by atLarge, Inc., Visit Sarasota, Feld Entertainment, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, and The Ringling. Spark Growth is the lead community involvement partner for the Tourism Service Jam.

Ringling College is partnering with Management Center Innsbruck (MCI), the host of the inaugural Service Design Tourism Conference, SDT 2012, to produce the event. SDT 2012 took place Innsbruck last August and was the first international conference on service design thinking in the travel and tourism industry. It was the closing event of a multi-year, multi-national project to study service design in tourism.
