Five days of Brexit touring to cost over $8000

It might appeal to a few Americans, but Australians would find something else to do with their money. That’s the general feeling about a short, pricey tour of London released by the New York Times.

Called “Brexit means Brexit”, the USD 5995 (AUD 8150) per person guided tour of London is designed to let participants  “examine the historic implications” of the historic Brexit vote to leave the European Union. Not exactly a scintillating subject, some may feel, though it may appeal to a few academics.

The six-day/five-night tour never leaves London, which is a bit odd, as London was one of the strongest bastions against Brexit.

Tour never leaves London

An examination of the tour by London’s Daily Telegraph says guests will “discuss Britain’s decision to leave the EU and the financial, legal and social implications for Britain, Europe and the world”. It will be accompanied by the New York Times’ bureau chief, Steve Erlanger.

Guests will stay in a four-star central London hotel and will meet with British historians, a real Member of Parliament and a member of the House of Lords.

The politicians will give “their views on Britain’s triggering Article 50 and the implications of being separate from the European Union”.

Cultural highlights will include a “typical pub lunch and a pint at a local pub frequented by members of Parliament”. Presumably the pint is included. Some people might consider that the highlight, though there’s also a walking tour of London.

On their final day, tourists will be taken for a guided tour of the Supreme Court, where the Article 50 Brexit Appeal was decided.

There has been much mockery of the tour on Twitter, with some Londoners offering to conduct similar tours themselves. It certainly seems a worthwhile pursuit.
