Five destinations that offer more bang for your holiday buck

Thinking of getting away this Christmas? It’s not too late to book your dream holiday. Spend the holiday season sipping coconuts in the Indonesian tropics, dancing the night away in Brazil or ringing in the New Year with shots of vodka in Russia – all without breaking the bank. To help you choose your next holiday destination, Babbel, the shortest path to learning a new language, has put together a list of the best places to spend your Aussie dollars.

Only a five-hour flight from Australia is the stunning French speaking, Pacific rimmed island nation of Vanuatu. Spend your holiday diving into the mesmerising blue holes of Espiritu Santo, climbing active volcan (volcano) Mount Yasur, or simply sipping on kava. Famous for their warmth and hospitability, Vanuatuans are known to invite travellers to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s with
their families. Be sure to say ‘merci’.

With more than 18,000 islands to choose from, head to touristy Bali for Bintangs or the eastern islands of Flores, Komodo and Lombok for more than 4,000 Komodo dragons, sea turtle hatcheries and miles of millennial pink sand. Don’t forget to try an Indonesian Christmas kue kering (cookie) while you’re there. Popular variations include ‘nastar’, a butter cookie with pineapple jam filling and
‘putri salju’, another butter cookie covered with powdered sugar and cheese.

Home to the world’s largest salt flats, Bolivia boasts historical ruins, extreme cycling paths (the world’s most dangerous in fact) and countless natural wonders. December is the quieter season, meaning that flights and accommodation deals are easy to come by, plus the Andes is briefly transformed into a lush oasis. Just don’t be too surprised by the endless boom of fuegos artificiales (fireworks) on Christmas Eve.

If you’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas, take advantage of the weak ruble against our Aussie dollar and book a trip to Moscow. Feast your eyes on the vibrant Red Square, Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral dusted in snow – urban legend says the cathedral’s architects were blinded to prevent them from creating anything more spectacular. Plus, Russia’s музеи (museums, pron: mu-zeyi), restaurants and bars all stay open over the Christmas period.

With the strong exchange rate, it’s the best time to book a flight to this vast expanse of South America. From long hikes in the Amazon to long drinks in Rio de Janeiro, there’s something for everyone’s taste. For New Year’s Eve, the place to be is a praia (the beach) in your whitest clothes, paired with your most colourful undies. Not just any, mind you – different colours represent different resolutions, such as orange for professional success or green for health.
