The Korean Wave continues to surge in Hong Kong and is now hitting The Peak! Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Madame Tussauds Hong Kong is going to launch the K-wave zone on April 30, 2015. An even more dynamic experience awaits visitors in this all-new themed exhibition zone, where fans can satisfy their insatiable craving for their favourite Korean celebrities by getting up close and personal with incredibly lifelike wax figures. To commemorate this special occasion, Madame Tussauds Hong Kong has invited Choi Siwon, a member of the ultra-popular pop group Super Junior, to attend the opening ceremony on April 30, 2015, during which the celebrity will unveil the new exhibition zone and the production process of his wax figure.
A total of seven Korean celebrities’ wax figures will be on display in this 10th themed exhibition zone at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, with the wax likeness of Choi Siwon and another Korean celebrity joining by the end of this year. The first to take centre stage at K-wave zone starting from April 30, 2015 are five other celebrities, including: Kim Soo-hyun, the lead actor of the immensely popular series My Love from the Star; U-Know Yun-ho and Max Changmin from TVXQ!, often referred as “the Kings of K-pop”; Nichkhun Horvejkul, singer and rapper from boy band 2PM; and Bae Yong-joon, best known for his role in the dramaWinter Sonata.
Choi Siwon debuted in 2005 as a member of the ultra-popular pop group Super Junior and has since soared in popularity as a singer as well as television drama and film actor. He has studied in Beijing and starred in a number of Chinese films such as A Battle of Wits, Dragon Blade, Helios and To the Fore. Super Junior, of which Choi Siwon is a member, was South Korea’s best-selling vocal act for four consecutive years since 2009 and has received critical acclaim including seven Popularity Awards of the Year from Golden Disk Awards and Mnet Asian Music Award Artist of the Year. Choi Siwon’s fans from around the world must be anticipating the star’s official appearance with baited breath.
To ensure the wax figure would be made to perfection, the Madame Tussauds sculpting team flew to Seoul for a seven-hour sitting process with Choi Siwon. In spite of the time-consuming process, Choi Siwon exemplified professionalism by paying close attention to the team’s explanation and provided valuable suggestions to help the team get a full grasp of his body features, facial expressions and impressions. Whilst the team also took measurements of all parts with great precision and shot hundreds of photographs from every angle possible for reference, Choi Siwon showed great interest in the wax-making artistry and the eyes, hair and teeth casts that were perfectly matched to create an accurate semblance. Although the sitting process was lengthy, Choi Siwon remained energetic and even let his sense of humor and playfulness shine through as he – much to the team’s pleasure – posed for photo cameos with the props.
Choi Siwon said, “I have always been inspired by Chinese culture and was fortunate enough to study Chinese history and language in Beijing. This experience had really broadened my horizon and shortly thereafter, I was given the opportunity to participate in many Chinese films. I am therefore extremely honored to join Madame Tussauds Hong Kong. I am truly looking forward to the opening ceremony on April 30. Not only will I be meeting my fans in person, but I will also be sharing the production of my very own wax figure – this is something that I am both anticipating and feeling very nervous about!”
General Manager of Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, Ms Kelly Mak commented, “The Korean wave is undoubtedly surging in Greater China and Asia Pacific, and Super Junior is definitely an important icon of the K-pop culture. As a key member of this popular group, Choi Siwon has risen to become an acclaimed celebrity for his dynamic talents, hard work and more recently, his critically unmatched performance in Chinese films. We are extremely honored to welcome Choi Siwon to the all-new K-wave zone at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong. I’m sure our even more star-studded attraction will continue to create unforgettable experiences for our guests.”
