Flickerfest is Australia’s largest short film competition, kicking off the summer cinema season under the stars at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach in January. Celebrating its landmark 25th year in 2016, screening the best short films from Australia and abroad, Flickerfest is also Australia’s only short film festival that is both Academy® Accredited and BAFTA recognised, demonstrating the global respect for our short film competition.

In 2015, Flickerfest commenced a partnership with Virgin Australia, taking Australian short films from the big screen to multiple screens across the skies. Virgin Australia’s amazing support has provided Australian filmmakers with another exciting platform to share their work with audiences throughout the country and is set to expand even further in 2016.

Growing this year’s partnership the Flickerfest program has extended to four months across Virgin Australia In-flight Entertainment from December 2015 through to March 2016, with even more expansive opportunities for passengers to take advantage of the festival’s inspiring short films. Building on Flickerfest’s existing partnership, the program will be also be available through Virgin Australia lounges across summer, enabling all Velocity Frequent Flyer members their very own VIP seat to the best short films Australia has to offer.

For the 2016 festival, Flickerfest received over 2000 entries with over 650 of those from Australian filmmakers, demonstrating the wealth of filmmaking talent emerging in the local industry and the importance of this partnership with Virgin Australia.

Virgin Australia General Manager Marketing, Michael Scott said, “The Virgin brand was born in entertainment and has a long history of leading this space. As a proud Australian airline, we’re pleased to see our partnership with Flickerfest continue to grow.  Virgin Australia provides a stage for talented local filmmakers to share their work and Flickerfest shares a suite of fresh, contemporary, inspiring Australian made films for our guests to enjoy, during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. There is no limit to the expertise and unique content Virgin Australia can leverage in Australia and around the world to continually offer our customers the best entertainment throughout their journey with us.”

Festival director Bronwyn Kidd says of the partnership, “I’m thrilled to be again working with Virgin Australia. Flickerfest is about celebrating our nation’s best filmmaking talent and this partnership gives these filmmakers another opportunity to share these world-class short films. It’s a fantastic way to bring Flickerfest to an even greater audience of film lovers.’’

This highly competitive award is recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), providing Australian filmmakers with a direct path to the Oscars.
