An elderly woman who threw a handful of spare change into the engine of a plane before take-off, for good luck, caused major disruption and a five-hour delay.

Ground crew had to strip down the engine for inspection and find the coins. Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post quoted Chinese mainland media saying Southern Airlines Flight 380 was held up at Shanghai Pudong International Airport after a female passenger, said to be aged about 80, caused a disruption.

An investigation by ground crew found nine coins in the left-hand engine of the A320, with the captain warning that they could have caused serious engine damage, the paper said, citing the airline’s official WeChat account.

Passengers alerted crew to the woman’s action after seeing her standing in the middle of the boarding staircase chucking coins into the engine for “blessings”.

After a safety inspection of the engine, the flight departed more than five hours late.
