Flight diverts to offload berserk biter

Weird behaviour in the skies seems to be increasing as the Christmas holiday “season of goodwill” approaches, with one flight forced to divert because a passenger was biting his fellow travellers and another flight disrupted by a woman repeatedly threatening to “kill everyone on this plane”.

The crazed biter made his presence felt on a long-haul JetBlue flight from Los Angeles International Airport to New York JFK.

Mid-flight, somewhere over the US state of Utah, a man suddenly began biting people seated alongside him. The biter apparently knew the bitees, according to an account by CBS. The biter then became more agitated, hitting and biting strangers, even attacking doctors on the flight who were trying to examine him.

Other passengers sprang up to help cabin crew restrain the biter, who by this time was yelling and punching as well as biting.

That was enough for the pilot, who diverted immediately to Las Vegas where, in JetBlue’s words, “the customer was escorted off the aircraft”. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas – and the biter certainly stayed in Vegas. The flight took off without him, conveying the other passengers on their scheduled flight to New York without further incident. The biter may face charges.

Meanwhile, a woman can be heard on this video ranting that she will “kill everyone on this plane”.

That was on another US domestic flight. The woman was allegedly caught smoking on the flight from Portland to Sacramento and was demonstrating her displeasure by shouting incoherent threats. Southwest Airlines said the woman was handed over to police as soon as the plane landed.
