The third exhibition in a series of solo artist shows celebrating the work of Northern Territory artists, Franck Gohier: a thousand miles from everywhere places the artist not only in a Darwin context, but a national one. This survey exhibition looks at Gohier’s practice spanning three decades. The exhibition features work from the artist’s major themes including: the global influence of Pop art and capitalism, the bombing of Darwin in World War II, Cyclone Tracy, and Darwin the city itself as subject.

Initially fuelled by the anarchic spirit of punk, Gohier began producing art in the 1980s, intertwining art, social politics and commentary which led the way to the establishment of Red Hand Prints.

“This exhibition celebrates and showcases the talents of one of the NT’s most popular and loved artists, Franck Gohier. Gohier is a leading contemporary artist whose work draws on social and political contexts of Darwin, yet also has a discourse relevant nationally.” said MAGNT Director, Marcus Schutenko.

Importantly, Gohier has forged his successful national career from Darwin, regularly exhibiting in galleries in the southern states and also represented in the collections of other state institutions.

“I feel deeply honoured by MAGNT, their staff and [exhibition curator] Glenn Barkley for giving me this exceptional opportunity to reflect on my career as an artist. This exhibition has allowed me to reconnect with the past, assess the present and pave the path to the future. I can’t wait to see what happens next!” said artist, Franck Gohier.

Exhibition curator, Glenn Barkley said “Franck is constantly reinventing himself – one day a printer, another day a sculptor, yet another a painter. Working episodically yet returning again and again to the subject of the city in which he lives and works – a city that has been built and rebuilt.”

“Gohier’s sensibility is intelligent, joyous and alive. There is an energy and work ethic that is hard to contain. It is no surprise that his work as an artist has the same qualities that he has as a person. His centrality as an artist in Darwin is replicated by the love, goodwill and support that his work receives from fellow artists in his home city and across Australia. Although unique and singular, Gohier gives us an image of what a truly contemporary Australian artist might look like.”

This exhibition coveys the artist’s practice to his most loyal coterie of friends, family, collectors and visitors to MAGNT and provides an insight into the depth and diversity of Gohier’s practice.

The exhibition will open with a big party, celebrating both the artist and his work, in a refurbished gallery on a night filled with art, entertainment and live music on Friday 2 February, 6pm.
