Fresh new look and fare coming to Skyline Queenstown restaurant

The Skyline Queenstown restaurant will debut an elegant new decor, fresh menu and even a new name, after an extensive renovation project to be completed in mid-August.

Work began this week at the restaurant, famous for its breath-taking views of the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu as well as its popular Taste of New Zealand buffet.

“We are moving away from our traditional buffet offering and taking a fresh, modern approach that will raise the bar in terms of quality, value for money and the overall dining experience for our guests,” Skyline Queenstown general manager Lyndon Thomas said.

The restaurant will feature a menu of iconic New Zealand dishes infused with international influences. Guests can chat with chefs at live cooking stations and watch as they prepare the country’s finest produce, from Southland lamb and beef to Akaroa salmon. Feast on seafood, delicious salads and tender meats slow-roasted on a new state-of-the-art rotisserie, all while enjoying spectacular views over Lake Wakatipu and the mountain ranges.

The restaurant also includes a mussel bar, where juicy green-lipped mussels will be served in the sauce of each customer’s choosing, with a selection of flavours to please every palate. After dinner, relax over a coffee and indulge your sweet tooth with another of the restaurant’s new offerings: a decadent dessert display featuring a floor-to-ceiling selection of sweet treats.

The revitalised restaurant will operate under a new name, to be revealed in the coming weeks, Mr Thomas said.

“We are going to give the restaurant its own identity, building a brand that will encompass our iconic location and emphasize the diverse menu that will excite the palate and engage the senses of our guests,” he said.

Annually, more than 150,000 guests enjoy dining at the top of the gondola, making the restaurant one of the busiest in New Zealand.

The Skyline Queenstown restaurant will remain open as normal throughout the renovation period. During this time guests will dine in the Wakatipu Room, usually reserved for private functions. Lunch is available from 12pm-2pm and dinner bookings from 5:45pm.

The restaurant renovation follows other significant enhancements to Skyline Queenstown’s food and recreation offerings over the past 18 months, beginning with the opening of the Market Kitchen cafe in June 2013. Skyline Queenstown has also added a Stargazing programme, Jelly Belly retail store and provides gondola access for mountain bike riders to the world-class Queenstown Bike Park.
