The highly anticipated launch of the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 2 will see seamless travel between Brisbane Airport and Surfers Paradise thanks to the new Airtrain and tram connection at Helensvale station.

From today, passengers can catch Brisbane Airtrain from Brisbane Airport’s Domestic and International terminals straight to Surfers Paradise and all major stops in between, with one simple change from Airtrain to tram at Helensvale station.

With Gold Coast tourism seeing a 7.2 per cent increase in domestic visitors from June 2016 – 2017, the renowned holiday destination is well placed to attract more travellers in 2018 with the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Julieanne Alroe, Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) CEO and Managing Director, welcomed the launch of the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 2, saying the new seamless transport option supports the growing number of visitors travelling via Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast and beyond.

“Currently 23 per cent, or nearly a quarter of a million, of all international visitors arriving into Brisbane Airport travel onwards to the Gold Coast region,” Ms Alroe said.

“With annual passenger numbers through Brisbane Airport forecast to more than double to around 50 million by 2034, efficient, convenient and seamless public transport options are vital to support the state’s economic development, reduce congestion and position Brisbane as the future international gateway to Australia.

“Having this rail link operational prior to the Commonwealth Games in April is good news as 70 per cent of all attendees coming for the Commonwealth Games are expected to arrive and depart via Brisbane. More importantly, this transport solution will create a long legacy for travellers, and locals alike, long after the Commonwealth Games.”
Airtrain CEO, Chris Basche said the tram service greatly assists tourists and locals in accessing the coastal region of the Gold Coast.

“Thanks to the new tram connection at Helensvale, it has never been easier to travel between Brisbane Airport and Surfers Paradise,” said Mr Basche.

“We are pleased to be part of such an exciting launch which will see Airtrain meet the growing passenger demand of those travelling between the Brisbane Airport terminals and the Gold Coast during the busy Christmas period, into the Commonwealth Games and for years to come.”

Airtrain is also set to wrap a tram in a unique design developed with customer feedback. The design will be displayed from December 21, to June 2018, promoting the Airtrain and Tram connection.

An online survey of almost 800 participants showed more than 90 per cent of respondents praising the new tram connection and its wrapped design.

One respondent of the survey said: “It is good to know that once you get on the tram at the Gold Coast, you get the connecting train all the way to the Brisbane Airport. Also the same can be done in reverse.”

“Our design came about following discussions and feedback with the community and it’s all about strengthening our ability to help our current and future passengers recognise the convenience and affordability of the tram connection,” said Mr Basche.

With ticket prices set at only $37.60 for adults and $9.80 for children*, travelling between the Gold Coast and Brisbane Airport has never been more efficient or affordable.

Airtrain is the fastest, easiest and most cost-effective way to reach Brisbane and the Gold Coast from Brisbane Airport. It is the sole rail service connecting Brisbane Airport to Brisbane CBD with more than 21 million passenger trips taken in the company’s 16 years of operation.
