From Stonehenge to Hadrian’s Wall: Peter Sommer Travels Now Explores the Ancient Landmarks of Britain
Archaeological tour specialist Peter Sommer Travels has announced its first tours in Britain, delving into extraordinary historic sites from Neolithic monuments and Roman ruins to medieval castles and Georgian mansions.
Two new itineraries will be introduced in 2017, each exploring some of the most scenic regions of the UK under the care of expert guides with backgrounds in history and archaeology.
Named ‘Tour Operator of the Year’ by the UK’s Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) in February, Peter Sommer Travels is best known for its archaeological tours and gulet cruises among ancient sites in Croatia, Greece, Italy and Turkey.
The new tours in Britain are the first offered outside the Mediterranean and provide the same successful combination of academic guides, small groups, fascinating ancient history and superb local scenery.
Focussing on regions in the north and south of England, the new tours will operate in the northern summer of 2017:
- Exploring Wessex: From Neolithic Avebury to Georgian Bath – Seven days exploring World Heritage sites and great landmarks of the old Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, including the Neolithic stone circles of Avebury and Stonehenge, the remarkable mosaics at the Roman Villa of Chedworth, the towering Cathedral at Salisbury, the picturesque ruins of Glastonbury Abbey and the Georgian grandeur and Roman legacy of Bath. Priced from £2645 per person twin share (approx A$4650), including accommodation in four and five-star character hotels. Operates July 2-8, 2017.
- Exploring Hadrian’s Wall: Romans, Reivers and Romantics – Seven days following the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s monumental fortifications across the frontier lands of England’s north, a region that has drawn conquerors and settlers from the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings to medieval warlords, border raiders and the Victorian romantics who fell in love with its stories. Priced from £2495 per person twin share (approx A$4390), it includes four-star accommodation in a magnificent 14th Century castle. Operates July 8-14, 2017.
Dozens of other Peter Sommer Travels expeditions are available in Croatia, Greece, Italy and Turkey, including city tours, land tours and cruising expeditions aboard traditional wooden gulets. Headed by archaeologist and former BBC documentary maker Peter Sommer, the company also offers expert-led gulet charters and land-based tours for private groups.
